KOBRA GLOSSARY
Adhocracy: A non-bureacratic networked organization. A form common in law firms, consulting companies, and research universities, as well as a few planetary governments. These organizations and institutions must continually readjust to a changing array of projects, each requiring somewhat different combinations of skills and resources. These organizations depend on many rapidly shifting project teams and much lateral communication among these relatively autonomous, entrepreneurial groups.
Admiral Jenkins' War: A recent conflict started by Union Admiral Mikhail Jenkins in the Kobra Worlds subsector, the Admiral commanded the “insurrectionist” 451st BatRon and its' escorting units which attacked the high-pop capital world Kobra last year. The initial skirmish took place in orbit of the heavily populated planet, but quickly spread across the system when loyalist forces under Kobra-Admiral Yevgeny Knox resisted. While attempting to secure the capital city from orbit, Jenkins was outflanked by Knox and nearly three dozen System Defense Boats (secretly concealed in the planets' oceans) and while struggling to evade the defenders' larger forces he nuked the world in desperation. This action forced Admiral Knox to break off and assist the survivors of the horrific attack (which ultimately took the lives of 3 billion citizens and Grand Premier Yuan Farris). Although Admiral Jenkins was killed later in the year trying to occupy the planet Marsella, the Kobra Worlds continues to struggle with attempts by the neighboring Fourth Interstellar Union to assimilate it.
Aide Society of Lasher: A benevolent religious group based on planet Lasher in Kobra Sector, the Aide Society of Lasher was one of the first groups that reached out to the Grand Premier of the Kobra Worlds, Yuan Farris, to try and uplift the local planets that have survived the Collapse that followed the Hammerstar detonation. The Aide Society has had a long and illustrious history and the organization is over 2,000 years old and is engaged in all sorts of good works towards their fellow man, although they are rabidly anti-alien in their outlook and philosophies. Ironically, Lasher is the name of a pagan god of destruction and the society itself has some mystical background rooted in an ancient religion called Pant’uism. The ASL is officially supported by the planetary government and college credits are often given to those who join the Society by local universities.
Akwaterra: One of the most beautiful Terra-type worlds in the galaxy, Akwaterra is a major high-population world located in the Mission Stars District. It's mammoth moon, Hardrock, is the site of its premier military R&D centers and the galaxys' most fearsome prison as well. This world was one of the first planets to develop black globe technology, with which it utterly dominated its' neighbors in the past. Akwaterra's defenses are literally mind-boggling to see, with vast numbers of dreadnoughts and superdreadnoughts cruising around the system and enormous asteroid forts ready to blow anything out of the sky that threatens. Akwaterra's surface is mostly covered with water.
Andoas System: One of the most phenomenal star systems to ever be discovered within the Orion Spur, the five worlds of the Andoas System are some of the richest, most heavily populated, and heavily defended planets anywhere. Located near the Mission Stars District, the five planets (Andoas, Campuya, Delfos, Carumas, and Yauyos) are all heavily populated, with most colonists being from a cross-section of human space. The GPV of this system is incredible, producing more than any other system known, except Corfu, Olde Earth, and Urbanos. This strategic piece of real estate was initially discovered by renowned pilot Mikhail Bekishev and was practically worthless; Bekishev did note that five of the worlds were in the lifezone of the parent star and could be terraformed. Later, over two thousand Second Creationists began modifying the worlds for eventual colonization and the Andoas System was created. The system is now the capital of Andoas Sector.
Atorees: Located in Calafate subsector of Kobra Sector, the Atorees are an ancient race, dating back nearly twenty millennia. Atorees are a short, asymmetrical, four-armed humanoid race whose homeworld (E4604446) is nearly deserted and completely non-industrial. The Atorees have no other off-world colonies other than their homeworld, which is now entering an advanced stage of desertification. During their expansive history the fortunes of the Atorees has waxed and waned, and they have controlled nearly half of Kobra Sector three times in the past. Their fortunes are much less glorious now and all Atorees colony worlds have unfortunately died off over the centuries.
Barwatten: Being populated for over 40,000 years, the planet Barwatten has had an extensive and illustrious history. Although continually side-stepped as a regional capital, the planet has been a important part of Kobra Sector politics. Barwatten also technologically fell during the collapse from TL17 to TL9. Trade conducted in the system is extremely heavy however, as large numbers of the planetary population are always wanting the latest goods. Barwatten was also one of the largest population concentrations within Kobra Sector. The technological collapse created utter chaos on Barwatten, resulting in over 100 billion deaths, dropping the overall population to around six billion people. Once having one of the highest tech levels in the sector, Barwattens’ technological debacle was extremely difficult, which also preceded a major government change (from a balkanized government to a feudal technocracy). During that time the starport also lost some capability, dropping from A to B. Barwatten is a heavily populated world and the planet is still struggling with the after-effects from of the collapse. Even though Kobra System helps Barwatten with technological exchanges it still struggles to export its’ excessive population and support local recovery efforts in Kyancutta Subsector (B423965-9 Na Hi In Po Mr).
Basement Universe: A small, possibly artificially created universe linked to an older universe by a wormhole or other gateway, Basement Universes can be used for living space, computing, or an escape from a decaying universe. I could also possibly be used for hiding from enemies or other destructive phenomena. A mega-engineering feat. In the Kobra Worlds Sector, Kincaids’ Universe (located near Tobermory) is one such construct. The discovery of Kincaids’ Universe, stumbled upon by the trashman-explorer Hasdruble Kincaid in 50,853 finally proved the existence of such galactic phenomenon. "Captain" Kincaids’ stubborn refusal by scientists to allow investigation of "his" basement universe (and the destruction of every Republic fleet hurled at it using unknown energies by the now-seeming immortal Kincaid) has stunted all research by the Republic in this area.
Battle of Canby Station: A battle during the Jurado Jihad, Canby Station was owned at the time by the planet Wynter, which only had nominal military forces in the area when the Jihad attacked. Using a battlefleet of cruisers and destroyers, the Jihadist forces eliminated the entire population of Canby Station even though the local Wynter naval commander, Commodore Ivan Jurgash, tried to stop the Jihad forces around the local gas giant. Wynter declared war on Jurado shortly after this battle and Wynterian forces joined up with the Kobra Worlds battlefleet to eliminate the Jihad in 50,835.
Battle of Tromph: A battle during the Jurado Jihad, the naval attack on Tromph was especially brutal as the Warlord annihilated the systems’ meager defenses and them brutally bombarded the planet with nuclear weapons until the government surrendered. This unprovoked attack killed millions and sparked indignation in nearby star systems. UPP B000784A
Beanstalk: A super-strong engineering feat that allow ground to orbit transferal of goods and people, there are several in orbit of Kobra World, but no others are known in the region. A strong cable lowered from geosynchronous orbit and anchored to the ground (often with a small asteroid at the outer end to provide extra tension and stability), beanstalks are seen throughout the Republic at heavily populated worlds and cost billions to construct. They provide cheap and simple access to space using elevators that “climb” the cable into space.
Beta Maximus Extinction: Thirty thousand years ago, a hypergiant star in Kobra Sector named Beta Maximus went supernova, depopulating 120 Kobra worlds and creating the Nert Sector. One of the largest and most devastating stellar explosions in history.
Biological Fundamentalism: A conservative religious movement that resists asexual reproduction, genetic engineering, altering the human anatomy, and overcoming death. A resistance movement born to counter the evolution from the human to the “posthuman”, and the creation of “Moreaus”, super-soldiers, and all “Franks”. The infamous Kobra-based Maronites and other small groups of religious people, including the Followers of God sect are biological fundamentalists.
Borganism: An organization of formerly autonomous beings that have merged their individual wills to create one, collectively conscious being. Borganisms are a highly dangerous group of individuals that routinely spring up within Republic space, the cause being unknown but quite possibly the result of the perverted use of nanotechnology. The “Builders” have been the most famous borganism collective to date.
Builders: A radial techno-organic sect of humans that attempted a violent takeover of Mannerheim Sector in 49,902. The fierce fighting between the Mannerheim Sector naval forces and the Builders resulted in the depopulation of the Agrippa System; the loss of over 18 billion lives. As a result of the war, organic computers were totally banned in the Mannerheim region that year, a ban that has maintained to this day.
Canges: An important world for nearly 50,000 years, Canges became the capital of the Canges subsector some time after the Empire fell, but historians aren’t certain when. After the detonation of the Hammerstar and the technological collapse that followed, the central government of Canges evolved into a ultra-powerful oligarchy who controlled nearly all the high-tech weaponry on the planet. Once a rich and vital world Canges has seen good times of late, dropping just one tech level and one starport level (a much easier fall than most of its’ neighbors) during the last 50 years. Canges’ population is 81 million people and it continues to heavily support the economic and political recovery within its’ subsector and works hand-in-hand with Kobra in these efforts. Canges is the location of an ancient Distributed Intelligence network called “Megagant”. (B763736-9 Ep St).
Carahue: Carahue is an important world working on recovery efforts across Kobra Sector but a strange cult (called Eastern Lightning) has been wracking the planet with a series of crimes, including high level lying, kidnapping, blackmail, torture, and possibly murder. It has been very hard to pin down exactly what the EL cult is doing due to their ultra-secrecy and destruction of evidence, but planetary authorities have been thoroughly alerted to their presence. Carahue is also a high-tech and energetic world and has continued economic trade across its’ subsector, even though it suffered a moderate technological collapse during the entire sectors’ demise after the Collapse reached the area in several hundred years ago. Carahue’s leader, High Lord Myke Wang, took over from the decentralized feudal technocracy nearly 30 years ago and continues to work with the Kobra Systems' leaders to help in the recovery of Calafate subsector. The planet currently has one of the highest tech levels in the sector and its’ population is 673 million people. Carahue is an extremely large planet with ammonia seas and a toxic atmosphere. (B9E48AA-B Fl).
Claytonism: A grand philosophy that takes parts from communism, Buddhism, and techno literacy, Claytonism was first created by Laquita Clayton, a eGuru from the planet Urbanos who quickly gained a vast following on her home world and via the Interlink. She was supposedly assassinated by the unknown assassins after she gained significant notoriety within the Republic, but her legacy lives on, in the form of a symbiosis of philosophy and economic theory. Many worlds within the Republik subscribe to Claytonism, and its pro-environment format, as well as the technological aspects of the philosophy, including eism and cyber-relativity.
Collapse: The most destructive occurrence in human history, the Collapse (from 83,050 AD to 100,908 AD) was started by the Hammerstar supernova and its’ effects continued down the spiral arm of the galaxy. Over 600+ billion dead in Kobra Sector alone, the Collapses’ effects were only halted in a small portion of Republic space in Kobra Sector. Only the extremely wealthy Farris families’ strenuous efforts stopped it around their pocket empire.
Collapse Conflicts in Kobra Sector: This is a small sample of the many wars and conflicts that have been fought in the last 100 years in Kobra Sector, each devastating in its own way.

Combat Wasps: These are high-tech hi-G attack missiles fired from external ordinance-equipped vessels, bases, and space stations that seek to engage their targets autonomously (usually through a AI interface). Combat wasps come in every size and function, including both attack and defense, and once launched they are fully automated. They carry a multitude of independent submunitions, including beam weapons (energy, laser, and particle), kinetic missiles, fusion bombs, decoy chaff, and electronic-warfare pods. They can also be packed with powerful antimatter warheads that are fed into the XO mounted wasp seconds before launch using a rotary feed from the ships' main magazine. Dis can also be used.
Communion of the Stars (CS): A religious group headquartered in Kobra Sector, the Communion of the Stars is a monastic order that is deeply rooted in one of Old Earth's most ancient religions, Christianity. The CS was one of the more important colonizing organizations in Republik history, the CS enabled poor inhabitants of over-populated worlds in neighboring Calafat and Inca Sectors to relocate to better worlds in Kobra Sector at little or no cost. A progressive order, the CS didn’t require you to be a member of the church to emigrate but priority was given to families first and people with significant frontier skills, especially abilities like woodworking and metallurgy for low tech worlds. The Churches’ substantial assistance in evacuating the high-pop world of Granyork bankrupted the organization in late 50,449, after which the CS defiantly gave its thirty-seven colonizer ships directly to the Granyork Relief Mission to continue its endeavors in spite of creditors demands to do the opposite. The CS moved its’ headquarters from Canby Station to the Soldier Moon and they now support the uplift efforts of Kobra World across the sector.
Concentrated Intelligence: An intelligent entity (AI computer) which is spacially concentrated into a single volume, as dense as possible, to reduce communications lag. This arrangement is not as flexible as a distributed intelligence, but probably more efficient. These entities are still being produced today, but only by extremely high tech worlds like the Kobra System.
Corfu: Corfu, megaplanet, Jewel of the Anciene Republik. With its one trillion inhabitants, Corfu is the largest producer of goods and services within the Republiks' hundreds of worlds. Appointed directly by the High Secretary of the Senate, the governorship is currently held by Northstar Solano, member of the wealthy and influential Solano family. The Governing Council helps Solano run the planet, and all ten members represent nearly one hundred billion citizens within his or her region. Unlike other Governors (and considering Corfu's strategic importance), Governor Solano only runs that planet, and no other world as political analysts have noted that whoever ran Corfu was the second most powerful individual in the Republik, after the High Secretary, and that is why the Governorship is limited to just that single world. A glittering gem in the darkness of the cosmos, Corfu's Achilles heel, of course, is its reliance upon sixteen different farming worlds to supply its food needs. Corfu is surrounded by Recife, Maui, and Qasr Bani sectors and has excellent relations with those regions.
Darkdown: An ethnically streamlined society, Darkdown is famous as the “planet of the bloody sun” and has had a very interesting political history (being colonized by a group called the “SCA” thousands of years ago). Its history is extensive and resplendent with notable characters and events that are the legend of books and stories told across the sector. When the Collapse hit Darkdown only the government changed, to a balkanized world. However, the tech level fell substantially, from B to TL 9. The law level also dropped precipitously but crime remained the same overall planet-wide. Darkdown once was a subsector capital millennia ago and various warlords from Darkdown have ruled the area with an iron hand at times, depending on the ruler. Darkdown was also the sector capital during the Empire-period but was replaced by Kobra System over 50,000 yeas ago. The population of Darkdown is currently 557 million and there are ten individual states on this planet: Pizarro, Neu Tremoy, Victoranna, Zebarth, Kamal, Cannistra, Bellingshausen, Wahill, Frobisher, and Calliouet (B654875-9 Ep Ex). Natives from this planet are well-known for their militaristic honor codes (including sword dueling) and are known as "Darkdowners" by their neighbors (a derogatory term).
Darsay’s Plague: A virulent and deadly viral outbreak that occurred within the central worlds of Kobra Sector in 50,520, Darsay’s Plague spread quickly and the Anciene Republik enforced a three-year ban on travel to the entire sector to stop its’ spread. The ban, which virtually cut off the central worlds of Kobra Sector from the rest of the galaxy, critically weakened the area and its’ ability to respond to the plague. During this period, around twelve billion persons contracted the disease, all of who died horribly. This outbreak prompted the development of the Republik’s initial military bioweapons programs and counter-disease organizations like the Interstellar Red Cross and Virus Intervention Teams (VITs).
Deacon Mission: Re-contact efforts made here. The Mission employs Players….an adventure. Hires troubleshooters, technicians, independent merchant captains for various duties.
Deep Interstellar Covenant: A secretive religious group based in Kobra Sector, the “Deepers” are famous as galaxy-wide explorers. They explored most of the Muralis arms’ nebulas, quasars, and even the occasional black hole, as well as many habitable worlds. The Deepers are technologically fearless, daring scouts and adventurers, as well as fanatical religious zealots. Their greatest discovery was finding the Jerlea Ringworld in ______. Deepers are cutting edge explorers.
Destruction of Sarney: 1 city on the planets surface (a waterworld), nuked from orbit by _________. Small groups of survivors lived among the fishing fleets until finally rescued by the Aide Society of Lasher 2 years later (50,891).
Dis Technology: Dis warheads are created at the highest of tech levels and are an offshoot of commercial nanotechology. Dis is a devastating substance, the culmination of centuries of nanotech development and military research. The substance is composed of trillions of disassembling nanobots, microscopic in size and destructive in action. Dis dissolves organic materials, anything organic including human flesh with incredible rapidity. When a warship is hit with a nano-D warhead, the nanobots go to work immediately, disassembling the ship in minutes into a grayish goo. Nano-D warheads have made HE cannon and railguns popular again since they can fired from these immense cannons.
Dis can be horrific when it goes "rogue", especially when used against planetary targets, dissolving everything on the planet’s surface; cities, oceans, and people. Quarantines must be maintained around rogue-dis enveloped worlds, otherwise it spreads rapidly like a cancer across the star lanes. Since its creation over a thousand years ago by the Anciene Republik, over 800 billion people have been killed and 33 worlds rendered uninhabitable; most planets have permanently banned dis military technology. Most Republik planetary defenses include fortresses and orbital bases with large nano-D cannons mounted on them.
Distributed Intelligence: An intelligent entity (AI computer) which is distributed over a large volume with no distinct center. This is the opposite strategy of concentrated intelligences. Distributed intelligences have much longer communications lags, but are more flexible in their structure and survive damage to their parts. DIs are mainly left over from ancient wars across Republikan space but some are still being built, including AIs from Kobra World. In the Kobra Worlds Sector several important DIs are located at Kyancutta, Wynter, Hellion, Canges, and Kobra World itself.
Double War: A dual conflict that raged across Kobra Sector (started in 49,877), the Double War sorely pressed Republican forces as genetically engineered super soldiers (the Fanrats) and large genocidal centipedes (the Dullustians) battled Republican forces across this arm of the galaxy. The conflict ended in 49,893 when the Fanrats were outmanueved and dispersed and the Dullustian invasion collapsed due to wide-spread deaths among their race by an unknown microbe carried by humans.
Drake Belgrano: A important reformer during the Bellevue System Revolt, this philospher-teacher encouraged the use of non-violence in political disputes with the Republik government after the rebellion was crushed. Nearly two dozen worlds were bombarded from space by the Anciene Republik and hundreds of millions of lives were lost during the rebellion that was spawned in the Bellevue System. Now cherished and honored by billions of citizens, Drake Belgrano is a living legend, a man of peace and passion, a modern-day reformer and advocate of change through non-violence.
Dullustian Invasion: A pre-Collapse conflict, one half of the “Double War”. Dullustians were an alien race who began invading the Kobra Sector from an unknown warp point, possibly a nearby wormhole (in Affars subsector in Galapagos Sector). Located far outside Known Space, the Dullustians, an aggressive alien centipede species, began an unstoppable invasion of Republic space in 48,878. Using some kind of advanced teleporter technology, the Dullustians overran three dozen subsectors and annihilated nearly 400 billion Republik citizens in an orgy of destruction. This event triggered the virulent backlash against aliens within the galaxy-spanning Republik and the invasion was only stopped when the Dullustians fell sick due to some human-borne pathogen.
Ectogensis: The creation of human life within artificial wombs. Used primarily by governments, corporations, genetic engineers, and single-sex worlds, this technology has also been used in the past to create large-standing armies of warriors that have little or no rights as citizens. These soldiers are typically known as "tanks" or "tubies".
Escravos: This planet is a very important and heavily populated world in Kobra Subsector. It is one of the few planets in Kobra subsector to retain spaceflight since the Collapse and it is a lush Earth Prime world with a population of 844 million people. The government has changed recently, from the dying Diktat-for-Life Phillyda Law to her son, Jared. Although Escravos suffered a major fall in technology following the Collapse, its’ population only endured a minor decrease in size. The system is very active in recovery efforts across the sector and works closely with Kobra System to restore the areas’ former glory. A major economic center, Escravos draws traders from as far distant as Explorador Calle to its Backdoor Market, the site of its famous diamond crystals, which is a heavily used industrial mineral that is unbreakable (B65686A-9 Ep).
Farris Succession Crisis of _____:
First Year: As in “They aren’t out of First Year yet.” This verbage is part of a low-tech approach to colonization techniques meant to prevent the spread virulent diseases of-world. It is the time period after a colony is set up that it is absolutely quarantined to prevent the spread of deadly diseases that may inhabit the planet; if the colonists survive and thrive after one year, any possible mutagenic or lethal viruses can be ruled out.
Flainer League: Early colonizers of Kobra Sector….”I hear you flainer”….Calafate, Shangcai, and Richese subsectors.
Franks: “Frankensteins” are humans who have been physically altered in a very visible way and are extremely unpopular amongst the normal community of humanity. Average people are generally afraid of the strange and unusual and Franks definitely fit that category. Often, Franks are thought of as actual mutants by the general populace but they are known among government and military circles as extremely efficient genetically engineered super soldiers, spies, and assassins. They have a wide range of genetically engineered abilities, most of which allow them to survive in combat, thus they have a difficult time fitting into normal human society and tend to keep to themselves. Many governments, corporations, and militaries have experimented with genetic engineering to create the “perfect soldier” and the end results are the so-called Franks. These beings usually do not have civil rights as they were cooked up in a lab and typically work for their creators. Some of the best Franks ever constructed were designed by the Barwatten Gene-Corp; the company invented polarized eyes, sanitized metabolisms, and enhanced muscular modifications.
Fringe War:
Genetic Engineering: geneering, genies
Hammer Cultists: A bizarre sect with little outside support, these cultists are violent, well-known fanatics and are well funded too. Located in .....
Hammerstar Supernova: The Hammerstar was a hypergiant star located in the lower Orion Arm spur. It went supernova in the year 83,050 AD and directly killed over 400 billion people. In its wake, a destructive anti-technology "wave" or "collapse" began to move across the surrounding areas. Regional shipping, planetary governments and organizations, all suffered serious damage as the Collapse swept outwards. Over its 20,000+ year expansion, it killed untold trillions of humans and aliens in the Orion Arm. One of the most critical aspects of the terrible destruction caused by the Hammerstar was the sudden and abrupt failure of every jump conduit within 5000 parsecs, and the isolation of the Jerlea Ringworld with its 12 trillion population. Civilization fell toward the tip of the lower Orion Arm. The Heller expedition of 98,050 reached a full two kiloparsecs to trailing and still did not find the far side of the devastation zone, if one existed. Macro-economists explained this phenomenon as a kind of anti-synergy; the opposite of the kind that has made the galaxy, overall, stable for 690+ centuries. To this day recovery in the region has been sparse at best, although some high-tech micro-empries were able to withstand the Collapse and remain viable. There have been other regional collapses across the galaxy but none involving this much territory, and none have been attributable directly to a supernova.
High Population Worlds: The Collapse (beginning in 50,833) utterly devastated the Kobra Sector, wreaking havoc on hundreds of worlds and destroying almost all centralized government within the sector. The effects of the Collapse were so severe that it plunged the region from a population of 985 billion to 304 billion today (50,924). The only high population worlds (+1 billion population) in the area are:
Barwatten
Bennud System
Filosa System
Kobra System
Kyancutta
Maroan Homeworld
Radisson
Ridgeway
Schwayder
Shangcai
Shimber
Titania
Tobermory
Waxxari
Wuhe System
Wysteria
Yanhe System
Hogg Moons: A pirate haven.....located in the Kasyanov System.
Holots: Check for colonies in Kobra, describe…Located on Waxxari, Andralandar, Blott, Igloo Three, and Garius Prime.
Inter-Corporate Emergency: Post-Collapse conflict….
Interlink: The broadband computer connection that connects most every computer node in a given solar system, creating a virtual reality in cyberspace that has to be seen to be believed. The Interlink is also used by military and government officials in many star systems. Interlink networks are only found in populated systems that are high tech.
Iptomil: An alien race of desert nomads who in the past expanded to the stars, the Iptomil are a race of humanoids in decline. Their homeworld (B231898C) is currently in a state of eco-collapse and they have no colony worlds that could have helped prevent their home planets’ demise. Iptomil’ishi is a poor non-agricultural world and its’ natives reflect their planet, moving from place to place by the millions and having no permanent cities. The Iptomil are located in Kyancutta subsector of Kobra Sector and are a world of the Republic.
Jerlea Ringworld: A magnificent starband created by the Skinnies over 50,000 years ago, the Jerlea Ringworld is one of the few artifacts remaining from the Skinny era. At its' height, the Skinines had over 12 billion people working on the project, as well as 100 hyperturning AIs. The cost to construct such an immense structure was literally astronomical but with thousands of worlds financing the mega-engineering project, the starband was completed in 130+ years using advanced nanotechology under AI supervision. Humans began settling the starband in ____ and renamed it the Jerlea Ringworld, after famed regional admiral Antonia Jerlea. The total population of the ringworld before the supernova occured was over 12 trillion inhabitants, and it was also the center of government for the Jerlea Sector. The vast economic power of the ringworld allowed it to dominate many nearby sectors as well, before its technological collapse after the supernova explosion reached it. Human natives of the ringworld are also known as "ringers", a derogatory term.
Jurado Jihad (50,833 to 50,835 RE): A post-Collapse religious conflict started by the Warlord of Jurado and backed by his Meccanite allies, this devastating two-year war was the first conflict in Kobra Sector after the detonation of the Hammerstar and cited by historians as the beginning of the Collapse in Kobra Sector. This conflict involved the Warlord and several different factions of religious fanatics on the planet Jurado that expanded across the sector (the Jihad), which killed billions of innocent bystanders. The Jihad failed, over 200 billion people were killed, and military anarchy continued to spread for decades afterward.
Keiar's Final War: A balkanized world with a long history of warfare, the high-population world Keiar (in the Kaituma System) was destroyed a hundred years ago after centuries of bloody conflict. Long-standing grievances between four powerful nations (Kerkyra, Perimor, Velathys, and Ni-Moya) culminated in a global bloodbath in which specialized combat constructs, bio weapons, "super soldiers", and high-tech off-world weaponry was used. Of the five billion inhabitants, fewer than 100,000 survived to reach safety among other planets of the sector.
Kill Cult: First recognized on the Anciene Republikan planet Barwatten nearly 80 years ago, Kill Cultists have spread to dozens of worlds (mainly high-pop) and are the bane of law enforcement officials everywhere. Kill Cultists try and “rack up” as many bodies as possible before they are killed. They follow a few rules: all “kills” must be by hand or something made by hand (ie a bomb). Although nuclear or bioweapons haven’t been used yet, many government officials fear just that and have totally banned all Kill Cults on any human world, everywhere. These thrill killers usually do not survive their “spree” but if they do they are automatically sentenced to death by Kobra and Republikan law. The sentence is usually carried out within days to stunt the individuals’ popularity among his/her group, a policy that appears to be working. Kill cultists are almost exclusively young human males.
Kobra System: The capital of the Kobra Worlds Alliance (a small pocket empire of 23 worlds), this world also has the largest population in the sector: over 1 trillion people live on this city-planet. It also has a very high technology level, and specializes in AI construction and advanced bioengineering (TL 18-19). The leaders of this world are intent on uplifting the neighboring star systems to higher tech levels, making them interstellar trading partners: so far this effort has been successful to date, with nearly no opposing forces or groups standing in the way.
Kobra Worlds Alliance: A small pocket empire of twenty-three worlds ruled by the megapopulation planet Kobra (the former sector capital), the Kobra Worlds are a remnant of the Anciene Republik and is under direct control of the Kobra System and its’ Grand Premier, Gerreg Farris. Some of its allied systems are slowly sliding into anarchy as effects of the Collapse are finally overwhelming it. The entire sector lost over 600 billion of its estimated 900+ billion inhabitants during the last 50 years due to the Collapse, a horrific loss of civilized life. Located in Canges, Kobra, King, and Richese Subsectors, the Kobra Worlds are also trying to fund a massive recolonization and tech uplift effort across the sector to reverse the effects of the Collapse. Premier Farris is coordinating with other medium-tech, medium/high-pop worlds in the sector to help in this effort but only time will tell if they will be ultimately successful.
Kobra Subsector: Located near Republican space, the Kobra Worlds subsector suffered far less than the rest of the sector during the Collapse that followed the detonation of the Hammerstar. The megapopulation planet Kobra was able to stabilize a small pocket empire around itself and avoid the worst of the effects of the disaster. However, serious instability has been wracking the area of late and Admiral Jenkins’ War deepened the political and social crisis within the Kobra Worlds as a whole. The area has fended off several serious attempts by the Anciene Republik to re-assimilate it.
Lakshwadeep League: A Hindi religious group located in Kobra Sector…
Lasher: Important world working on recovery efforts across Kobra Sector, Lasher (a Type E world, B8E4724-9) is a militant society that allows dueling, combat AIs and genetically-engineered supersoldiers, as well as large powered armored walkers. The planet recently fought a Borganism outbreak 3 years ago and was able to defeat it using the "Lasher Walker". The "Walker" was created during the Borganism fight and has become a popular off-world export. The planet is a participatory democracy and the Lasher Aide Society, an influential religious group, is based here. Lasher is uplifting five different worlds in the sector and re-colonizing one: Nortaria.
Lighting Brothers: Over the last 50 years, religious churches within the Kobra Sector have been targeted by an incredibly bizarre quasi-Christian cult: the Lightning Brothers. The Lightning Brothers have ravaged many churches inside the sector through a brutal campaign of kidnapping, beatings, blackmail, and, according to some Protestant church leaders, murder. LB is becoming a serious menace as its operatives are spreading across the region quickly and their ultra-secrecy and destruction of evidence has been so thorough that it has been extremely difficult to prove any LB members involvement in these crimes. The Lightning Brothers has thrived in the sector at least in part because of the beneficence of the planet Barwatten, which has allowed their leader "sanctuary' due to supposed {political oppression". From his base on that planet he continues to encourage his followers to attack, disrupt, and coerce religious groups across the sector.

Majesty: An important world working on recovery efforts across Kobra Sector, Majesty is a unique egg-shaped world with a lethal fluid atmosphere and seas. Majesty has also recently suffered significant drug problems: as a consequence of its recently established one-child policy, many children are being indulged by their parents and two sets of grandparents with money and freedom, both of which can be used to experiment with drugs. Also, the left-leaning Demoprat Party on Majesty has never commanded a significant popular following, and it has gained and retained power only through intrigue and coup. As a result, Majesty has had to cope with endemic civil disorder for the last 30 years and suffering a high inflation and plummeting GDP as well. Majesty’s armed forces are partially corrupted by drug traffickers. Paramilitary forces are steadily being increased to fight the drug lords of the system. On a side note, a psionic strain of "Fireburster" wild talent runs through this planet; Majesty has a 980 million population and is a large, type “E” world. (BAE186A-B Fl Ni)
Maranatha Society: A Kobra Sector aid group that buys extra grain and ships them to needy worlds. Funded by ________ on ________. Funded by a foundation on.....
Maroans: A multiple-brained aquan race, Maroans have had a unique and long-running history within the human-dominated Republic. Their homeworld (C7659655) is heavily colonized by humans as well and it is technically a Kobra Worlds protectorate. Located in Kobra subsector of Kobra Sector, the Moroans were conquered by Republican forces thousands of years ago and now seem content with human rule under the Farris Administration.
Meccanism: The apparently wide-spread belief that all Islamic peoples, regardless of location or political loyalty, should follow Muhammad and his appointed heirs on Earth, including the mandatory five times a day prayer to the ancient city of Mecca. One of the more "difficult" religions within Republik space, Meccanism has never grown beyond its early beliefs and remains stagnant, statist, and regressive (especially towards women). This religion is often wildly popular on low-tech and low-educated worlds.
Megafreighters: Incredibly huge commercial transports weighing in at over 50,000 tons, megafreighters are used primarily to haul large loads of goods and products across the starlanes (usually agriculture). These titanic freighters are used heavily by many groups, including the Maranatha Society: one load by a 50,000 ton freighter can drop of enough grain to feed a 10,000 man colony for 10 years. Modules are designed to break up and land aerodynamically once in orbit of a planet. Only a few commercial freighters of this size in Kobra Sector are left over from the pre-Collapse era.
Megaworlds: Megaworlds are extremely heavily populated planets with over 100 billion people. With that sort of population, they become massive centers of economic and military production within the Anciene Republik (and beyond). This makes them stupendous magnets of trade that draw every and all capitalist combines into their fantastic web of wealth creation. For example, with up to a trillion inhabitants on each world, Urbanos, Dhassa, and Corfu each outnumber the total population of their subsectors and influence the economies of hundreds of worlds light years distant. Being a megapopulation world means that their massive consumption of goods and materials also makes them prime targets in any shooting war, and thus they usually have heavy system defenses. These humongous worlds continually influence events within the Republic, whether they like it or not.
Megascale Engineering: Technology using energies, scales, or methods far beyond most imaginable tech levels. Typical examples are ground-to-orbit beanstalks, Dyson spheres, and stellar husbandry. In some places, the Anciene Republik's tech levels are high enough for megascale engineering to be used, but its considered a fledgling industry that is only beginning.
Merchancy: A proprietary, commerce-orientated quasi-government which claims sovereignty over its land and property but not the allegiance of its citizens/clients. Only 50 recorded planets within Republic space have this type of government.
Nanoplague: A deadly and…….borganisms, Revivors, etc
Nanotechnology: One of the most incredible transformations of humanity came with the development of real, useable nanotechnology in the late Empire of Humaniti era. Research into this area had been going on and off for several thousand years until researcher Jon Gladden, one of Granyork's most prodigious scientists, developed the first nanotech assemblers with encoding built-in. Dr. Gladden, then a cutting-edge cybernetic researcher involved with medical-technological interfacing, achieved the incredible developments after decades of intensive research. The dramatic improvements in medical nanotech allowed generations of people to live to a much older age (usually centuries), in extraordinary health. Genetic engineering breakthroughs came quickly afterwards, causing a revolution in military personnel and applications, but it was nanotech that truly changed the Republik military. The military made use of nanotech early on in its development, with nanotech repair systems and micronized power systems allowing the Navy to create smaller, more powerful weapons systems. Nanotech robots were also created to become military analysts, grunts, and in one case, a commanding officer within the Republik Navy. New breakthroughs into picotechnology (quantum level engineering) is appearing to mark another revolution within the Republik military as well. Primary funding for picotechnology comes from the Navy, as well as several high-population Republic planets, with results looking promising.
Nert Rift: A vast empty region of space that fills half of Kobra Sector. Formed by the Beta Maximus explosion.
Novo Atlanto: Home of Homo Icthyus…..a race of genetically engineered mermen: perfect memory and other genetically engineered abilities.
Olde Earth: Also known as Terra, this planet is the birthplace of mankind and former capital of the Empire of Humaniti. It is here that most of our significant history has occurred. While many historical events have shaped the planet and its inhabitants, one of the most important was brought on by a surprise nuclear attack on the United States by the Communist Chinese in 2022 AD. This 30 minute war eventually killed over one billion people and threw the planet into a technological and financial collapse that took more than 200 years to fully recover from. Neither side would ever again play a major role in global affairs, and the Chinese in punishment were banned from space travel for over a thousand years. Later, as France, Russia, India, and Japan began to control the planet into the late 2600s, the jump drive was discovered. These planetary powers controlled the new interstellar colonization efforts, and the eventual formation of the League of Humanity, one of the first human interstellar governments. After two thousand years of continual expansion, fighting broke out on Olde Earth and across the League as political corruption and several disruptive grabs for power by fleet Admirals wore down co-operation among League member worlds. The "Ascension Wars" were a bad time for Old Earth, as factional fighting repeatedly broke through Terra's planetary defenses and the planet itself was subjected to brutal bombardment. When Admiral Ellington de Moya finally ended the wars and formed the Empire of Humaniti, Earth quickly regained its former glory and was named capital in 4,686 AD. Since that time, Olde Earth has overseen the development and expansion of human space from its secure location at the center of human expansion, even though the capital was eventually shifted to Corfu in 7454 AD at the creation of the First Anciene Republik. The Emperor's residence, the Gold Dome, is now located in the ancient city New Zurich on Corfu.
Onesexers: An unnatural (some would say perverse) and sometimes violent sect of human beings. Onesexers are a society based on a single sex and usually ostracized by the rest of the galaxy. Worlds like this tend to be all-male although several all-female planets are known. Onesexers are just that, one sex: they oppose any and all contact with the opposite sex, sometimes militantly. Onesexers have their own worlds (144 at last count) spread across the galaxy and they reproduce via ectogensis. Ancient human texts used to call these people “homosexuals” but the current term “Onesexer” is more acceptable. Wynter is the only one-sexer world in Kobra Sector region.
Onesiders: A radical sect formed nearly 200 years ago, the Onesiders are a pro-“worker” and anti-corporate technological group bent on "empowering the people", eliminating all Megacorporations within the Anciene Republik, and centralization of political power (usually in their hands). Highly militant and effective, Onesider attacks have been especially brutal in recent years, dealing death to anyone who dares side with "corporate sellouts." Assassinations of corporate employees, high-level officials, and destruction of corporate equipment is their main method of operation, up to and including the use of biological, nuclear, and antimatter weapons. Onesiders enjoy widespread worker support only from extremists on the fringe of society and more than a few members of this sect are current or ex-military.
Picotechnology: Technology using objects on the picoscale (quantum level). This involves nucleons and other elementary particles doing useful work, involving quantum effects. Unlike nanotechonology, picotechnology has been only in limited use within the Republik for a half dozen years.
Pilgrims: Genetically engineered inhabitants of the Pilgrim System, these people have been spread across Kobra Sector since the destruction of their star system by a rogue black hole nearly 100 years ago. Dominant chromosomes enable the hugely built and massively strong Pilgrims to breed true to their genome, even though they are widely scattered and sometimes oppressed. Pilgrims are routinely seen in the Republik Marines, where their incredible size and strength are assets in combat. They are often recognized by the red crosses tattooed in their foreheads, which is a symbol of their faith. Kobra World is offering the survivors of the Pilgrim System Disaster to relocate to an uninhabited world of their choice within Kobra Sector, and offer which has not (yet) been refused.
P’zirr Empire: Ancient, vast, extinct hyper-tech alien race that once controlled most of Kobra Sector. Wiped out by what?? Kobra scientists think a galactic plague transmitted by the P’zirr’s “mat trans system” did them in…

Project Prometheus: A huge undertaking. Building twenty-four megacolonizers able to transport one million colonists a week in low berth to new worlds. Ships being built at Kobra System and Rawson II, ready a few years. A hideously expensive project ordered by _________.
Providentialism:
Psychocultural Upheaval:
Pyramid Eradication: Once an important area of Republikan trade and commerce, the Pyramid Cluster (with its' fourteen inhabited worlds) was rendered uninhabitable by an unknown source. Over twenty years ago the planet Primus detected a strange ship entering the system, but all attempts to hail it went unanswered. Mysteriously, the ship chose to enter orbit around a large asteroid in the inner belt and when the Primus government sent a ship to investigate, it was destroyed by x-ray laser weaponry, a weapons system unknown to the Anciene Republik. The intruding ship had used nanotech to convert large parts of the asteroid into offensive devices and a few weeks later dozens of heavily armed warships began attacking the system defenses of Primus, taking the inhabitants completely off-guard. Outgunned, all the humans of Primus could do was die and they were slaughtered horribly by nano-D weaponry. Although the planets' skynet performed admirably, in the end the planets' biosphere was eradicated and the strange ships went on to eliminate the rest of Pyramid Clusters' populations before being driven off by a large Republikan armada in _______.
Rao: Dionii, Krakyt, others....
Revivors: In some star systems, rogue nanotechnogy can run amok, causing serious damage. Borganisms often use Revivor nanotech to bring the dead back to life, making them part of their vast mindless armies. Revivors, however, do not have to be part of a Borganism to be dangerous. Even small groups of these nanotech-undead can infect larger populations and planets across the galaxy deal with this sort of outbreaks with deadly force as early as possible to prevent its spread. The last Revivor outbreak was on Tobermory last year.
Rh/attes: A race of rat-like aliens standing normally four feet tall, the Rh/attes have had a on-again off-again relationship with humanity. Although not as alien as the wasp-like Dionii, the reptilian Ssora, or vampiric Luren, the Rh/attes have had some enmity towards humans since the conquest of their homeworld by the Republican Navy 40,000+ years ago. Being skilled at trading as well as being information specialists, the Rh/attes have worked with special agents of the Republik in several different situations including the Bellevue System Revolt and 4th Regional Conflict. Nearly forty billion Rh/attes are spread throughout Republik space, serving in varied high-level functions. When first looking at a Rh/atte, most people are reminded of the disgusting disease-infested rodents of their homeworlds, and treat Rh/attes accordingly. Although disliking this treatment, Rh/attes have become accommodated to this treatment and strive hard to prove their worth to their mammalian allies. The informational analysis of Rh/attes has helped the Republik at several crucial moments, including the Farseel System Disaster and the Fourth Holot Negotiations. The Rh/attes also have investigative teams researching the famed Laowon Tyranny and Dusarra Dyson Sphere, a object reputed to contain the surface area of one billion Earth-like planets. In Kobra Sector, Rh/attes live on Wenxian, Gilwa II, and Fogtree.
Rif: A Rif or Rifkinite is a supporter of an ancient humanist from Olde Earth and his anti-genetic engineering, anti-nanotech crusade; against any and all research or implementation in these areas. Having survived for centuries, Rifkin's ideas have evolved into a sect bent on "saving" humanity from rabid technology. A gifted terrorist group that operates openly in the chaos region that is Kobra Sector.
Rothori: A unique alien race, the Rothori are a multi-cellular race that can change their form at will, even to the point of slipping under a door or small crevices in the floor. Rothori live in small lakes on their homeworld (Rothori Zha, C440310) and the planet is non-industrial, poor, and literally one gigantic desert. These gelform aliens are also the galaxy’s best mathematicians and can only be found off-world in small numbers. Rothori are mainly located in King subsector of Kobra Sector, have never colonized other planets, and they usually do not venture far from their homeworld.
Second Creationists: This philosophy embraces genetic engineering, medical nanotechnology, and other "posthuman" ideas and sciences as well as faith-based beliefs. It is a wide-spread belief on most high-tech worlds and is opposed by "Rifs" and other anti-tech fringe groups.
Skinnies: An ancient giraffe-like race that once had a flourishing empire that included some of Kobra Sector, the Skinnies were overrun by the Triumvirate several thousand years ago and only the intervention at the last minute by humans saved them from total annihilation. The Skinnies were the original builders of the starband in Jerlea Sector but they have fallen technologically and only have a few worlds beyond the starband area.
Skynet: integrated planetary defenses centered on a planet or moon, usually run by an AI....
Spainwaiters: Early colonizers of Kobra Sector…
Springer: A human inhabitant of the massive high-gravity planet Spring, Springers are genetically engineered to withstand the bitter cold and brutal environmental conditions of their planet. Springers are typically eight feet tall and have a average body weight of 350 pounds. Spring is a harsh winter planet ruled by a small patriarchal circle, forcing many Springers to immigrate off-planet, typically into the Republican armed forces.
Star of the Morning: A religious group based solely in Kobra Sector, this cult is centered around the destruction of numerous societies from the Hammerstar detonation. Numbers are thought to be in the hundreds of thousands, across dozens of worlds.
Starband: Also known as the Jerlea Ringworld, it was created by the Skinnies and is mostly inhabited by humans to this day. The starband was cut off from civilization during the Hammerstar Supernova. At the time it had a phenomenal population of 12 trillion sentient beings.
Starports: These are planet-based or orbital locations that service starships/spaceships. There are several different types of starports, specifically:
A - We build starships
B - We repair starships
C - We build spaceships
D - We fuel ships
E - We give ships a place to land
X - No ships, nothing to see here, move along
Starflyer War: A devastated conflict between the Ancient Republik and the former Bushi Empire, it lasted nearly a thousand years and defined by the use of Bushi "Starflyers": organic-based ultrafast drones with planet-shattering warheads. These long-range automated weapons could be launched against any planet within a 1,500 light years of the Bushi Homeworld with a very good chance of success. Over 75 worlds in the Lower Orion Arm were destroyed by Starflyer strikes, but in the end the tens of thousands of human worlds overwhelmed the Bushi by sheer numbers and ended the war in _____.
Stellar Husbandry: To control the evolution and properties of stars, especially to stabilize them, prolong their lifetimes, manipulate the stellar wind, lift off useful material, or create new stars. Typical methods would be star lifting or mixing the stellar core with envelope material to make hydrogen burning last longer. The Anciene Republik specializes in this type of megatechnology, although the Kobra Worlds has recently begun to lift off useful material from stars in several locations across Kobra space. The first real application of stellar husbandry took place under the supervision of stellar theorist Cristina Zurita of the Instituo de Astrofisica de Neove Canarias in the Tenerife System nearly 5,000 years ago.
Subjugation of the Maroans: The Maroans are an aquatic alien race who had a small empire in the lower Orion Arm until the Republik annexed the area more than 50,000 years ago. Substantial fighting took place for almost 800 years before humans overcame the Maroans, forcing them to give up their colony worlds and restricting them to their home planet. During that conflict civilian Maroans were wiped out by humanity by the billions and the struggle became especially brutal at the end of the conflict, with genocidal strikes by these aquatics on three high-pop human worlds in response to human terror tactics on Maroans. To this day, the Maroan Homeworld is occupied by human forces.
Techlift: To technologically lift a planet that is near the tech level needed to achieve jump drive, typically a TL 8-9 world. A deliberate political policy initiated by the capital world Kobra to uplift worlds technologically all across Kobra Sector, to help the recolonization effort of the region. (GIVE EXAMPLE OF TOBERMORY)’S UPLIFT PROCESS).
Technophobes: Technophobe worlds located in Kobra Sector are ______________________.
Transhumanism:
Union Navy: Seen as a hostile outside force by the
Kobra Worlds, especially since the raid by Admiral Jenkins. They keep
down pirate raids in Republikan space however and ______.
Union Worlds: Only a small portion of Kobra Sector remains in the hands of the Fourth Interstellar Union, including most of Kyancutta and DiSante subsectors. The following planets are Union worlds in Kobra Sector:
Barwatten
Dagomarsh
Darkdown
Diamond System
Dome
Gastenhowe
Hyannisport
Hyperion
Imptomil’ishi
Kennebunkport
Linblader
Layover
Llyra
Valledupar
Uplift Accords:
War Against the Fanrats: The first recorded genetically modified humans, the Fanrats are a highly aggressive offshoot of Humanity. The fought in the Holdover Wars (in Inca Sector) and when that conflict ended they were forcibly relocated to Kobra Sector, which was then a lightly populated region of the Republik. Ignited by ongoing racial tensions, the Second War against the Fanrats started in 49,877 when Republikan forces began mandatory military recruitment from the planet Amarilla at the outbreak of the conflict with the xenophobic Dullustians. This fighting began what historians call the Double War, as the Republik fought a titanically desperate and widespread struggle against both the Fanrats and the Dullustians. The Fanrat conflict ended in 49,892 in the Battle of Pol as the Republic Central Fleet under Admiral Cordoba crushed the Last Fleet of the Fanrats, and their people were dispersed. The planet Kobra was colonized as a forward base against the Fanrats during the war and became a major economic powerhouse within the Republik. Fanrats are infamous throughout Kobra Worlds for their frequent rebellions and are genetically engineered militant humans, similar to Dreamers in nature and fantastically violent. Generally ruled by oligarchies.
Wynter: A single-sex (men only) world located in Kobra subsector, Wynter is a jump-capable planet that is heavily glaciated and is actively involved in uplifting several of the local worlds around it. Wynter signed the Uplift Accords with the Kobra System and is actively allied with Kobra, including substantial tech transfers by Kobra to Wynter. The population of Wynter is 647 million. A “Wynterman” is Kobra Sector slang for a homosexual man and is usually deadly insult off Wynter itself (B776899-9 Gl)
